2025 Fall Family Session Outfits in Alaska | What to Wear Guide

Fall in Alaska means golden light, crisp mountain air, and vibrant foliage—creating the perfect backdrop for your family portraits. But one of the biggest questions I get is: “What should we wear?” That’s why I’ve put together this 2025 blog post guide to fall family session outfits in Alaska. Whether you’re dressing moms, dads, teens, or little ones, these tips will help you stay on-trend, comfortable, and photo-ready for your portraits.

Why These Trends Work in Alaska
  • Rich Colors & Textures: Think golden beige, deep plum, olive green, steel grey, and dusty pink—colors that complement changing fall foliage.

  • Movement-Friendly Silhouettes: Flowing maxi skirts, relaxed trousers, and cozy knits let your family move, hug, and laugh naturally.

  • Layered & Tailored Outerwear: Leather coats, trench layers, and structured pieces offer warmth and style that complement Alaska’s mountain scenery.

Outfit Ideas by Family Member

Mom
  • A flowing midi dress or maxi skirt layered with a knit cardigan or cozy sweater—a perfect blend of romance and comfort.

  • Rich tones like plum, olive, or golden beige pair beautifully with fall foliage and coordinate across family members.

  • Denim or suede skirts with tights or tall boots keep your look polished and chill-proof.

Dad
  • Think structured outerwear like coats or jackets in deep olive or navy for a timeless, rugged look.

  • Layered neutrals—taupe sweaters over gray or denim trousers—create a grounded, cohesive palette.

Younger Kids
  • Go for warm neutrals—ivory, beige, taupe—paired with textured sweaters and cozy scarves.

  • Add a pop of season with dusty pink or golden beige accessories (hats, mittens, boots).

Teens
  • Flowing skirts with knit tops or cropped sweaters provide a stylized, movement-friendly layered look.

  • Incorporate fashion-forward pieces like baggy jeans, leather jackets, or statement boots (chelsea or knee-high)—they’re trending for fall 2025. Teens feel better during a session if they feel like that have a say in their outfit 😀

Coordinated Color Palette Suggestions
  • Golden Beige + Steel Grey: Modern, serene, and versatile.

  • Olive + Plum: Rich, earthy tones that pop against autumn foliage.

  • Dusty Pink + Navy: Soft meets deep contrast—romantic and refined.

  • Use muted palettes for timeless elegance, or jewel tones for a bolder statement.

Styling Tips
  1. Start with Mom’s outfit—then build the rest of the family’s coordinating palette from there.

  2. Mix textures: Wool, suede, knit—these layered textures photograph beautifully and add depth.

  3. Aim for movement—flowy fabrics, layers, and comfy pieces mean more candid and joyful photos.

  4. Limit bold prints, but a neutral animal print accent (like a scarf or boots) can feel trendy without overpowering.

Fall 2025 is all about cozy elegance—with timeless neutrals, soft textures, and elevated layers that travel beautifully through your memories. When families embrace these trends, your Alaska portraits become as memorable as the season itself.

What to Expect from a Family Session with Leslie Meadow Photography | Anchorage Family Photographer

If you’re wondering what a family photo session with Leslie Meadow Photography is like, you’ve come to the right place. Whether you’re a returning client or new to the wild and wonderful world of Alaska family photography, I want to give you a little peek behind the scenes of what it’s really like to step in front of my camera.

Spoiler Alert: It’s Not Your Typical “Say Cheese” Session

Think less stiff poses and forced smiles—think more chasing giggles through wildflowers, snack breaks on mossy rocks, and spontaneous dance parties in the golden light. My sessions are laid-back, joy-filled, and rooted in connection. We’re not aiming for perfect—we’re aiming for real. That means scrunchy nose laughs, muddy toes, and the kind of hugs you feel in your bones.

Because let’s be honest: kids don’t sit still. And that’s kind of the point.

For the Dirt-Loving, Puddle-Jumping Adventurers

These sessions are built for your butterfly watchers, rock collectors, snack negotiators, and dirt-loving explorers. We don’t force moments—we find them. Whether we’re wandering through wildflower fields, exploring mossy trails, or letting the kids lead the way down a gravel path, we let nature and your family’s personality guide the flow.

Some families worry their kids are “too wild” or “won’t cooperate.” Please hear this: wild is welcome here. In fact, it’s celebrated. Movement and play are part of the experience, not something to overcome.

We Focus on What Matters: You

The heart of every session is connection. My goal is to capture your family as you truly are—tight-knit, goofy, loving, maybe a little chaotic, but always yours. I’ll gently guide you when needed, but mostly, I observe and encourage you to just be together. Hug. Tickle. Run. Snuggle. Repeat.

Alaska Is the Ultimate Backdrop

There’s nothing quite like the wild beauty of Alaska to frame your family’s story. Whether it’s the towering mountains, serene forests, golden tundra, or the soft, diffused light of a cloudy day—this place does the heavy lifting when it comes to atmosphere. I’ll scout a location that feels like you and makes the most of what nature is giving us that day.

Why Summer is the Perfect Time for Your Next Family or Important Milestone Session in Alaska | Anchorage Family Photographer

Hey friends!

If we’ve worked together before (and I’m lucky that so many of you are repeat clients — thank you!), you already know how magical Alaska is in every season. But summer? Summer here hits different — especially when it comes to capturing your family’s love and laughter on camera.

So if you’ve been thinking about booking a family or milestone session this year, here’s why summer is the sweet spot:

🌞 1. Long, Golden Hours of Light

Alaskan summers gift us with endless daylight. Seriously — we’re talking daylight that lingers. This means more time to play, explore, and create that dreamy, sun-kissed magic that makes your photos glow. Late evening sessions? Yes, please!

🌿 2. Nature in Full Bloom

Wildflowers, lush greenery, and wide-open mountain views — summer in Alaska brings a color palette that’s hard to beat. Whether it’s your kiddo’s first birthday, a senior session, or just an updated family portrait, the vibrant backdrop of summer adds life to every frame.

🧒 3. Happy, Barefoot Kiddos

Let’s be honest — kids are just happier when they’re not bundled in six layers. Summer means no mittens to wrangle, no frozen noses, and more genuine giggles. Plus, it’s the perfect season for candid, barefoot-in-the-meadow kind of memories.

📅 4. Milestones & Moments

Summer often marks meaningful transitions — graduations, birthdays, anniversaries, and new beginnings. It’s the perfect time to celebrate the chapter you’re in. These sessions don’t need to be overly posed or formal — just real, relaxed, and authentically you.

📸 5. The Familiar Joy of Being Together

For many of you, we’ve documented your family year after year. Summer gives us the space to slow down, reconnect, and create something beautiful — whether it’s at your favorite spot or somewhere new we find together. And yes, dogs are always welcome.

Let’s Make It Happen

Summer dates fill up fast, especially with all of Alaska waking up and getting outside. If you’re ready to book your next session — or even just thinking about it — let’s chat soon. I’d love to see your familiar faces again and capture this season of your story.

Because time flies. And summer, well… summer shines.

Winter Session Tips | Anchorage Family Photographer

7 Tips for Preparing for Your Winter Session

Some people shy away from winter sessions because, well, it’s cold. But winter sessions make for some prime photo ops, so don’t write off the brr months. I LOVE winter sessions and the peaceful stunning backdrops they provide! The mountains really love to show off in the winter!

1. Keep tracking the weather. Those white winter days after a lot of snowfall can result in some seriously gorgeous photographs. Booking two months out probably won’t work, and you’ll instead want to book on a shorter notice. I leave room in my schedule to allow for winter sessions

2. Really play up the winter accessories when planning outfits. Think cozy knit scarves, colorful coats, adorable boots, mittens, beanies and more.

3. Plan the day out so that nobody gets fussy or too cold. A bribe of hot chocolate after the session goes a long way. Also make sure that everyone’s dressed warmly. I recommend mittens, even the cheap ones from Walmart or Fred Meyer. You can fit Costco base layers under most outfits to give an extra layer of warmth. Wear shoes that are warm over dressy. I know it’s hard, but the session will go much smoother! Hand warmers are a must! You can put them in pockets, gloves, etc. Also, the foot or body warmers!

4. Don’t be afraid to have fun in that snow. Snowball fights? Tossing the snow in the air. The possibilities are endless and this should be all about having fun.

5. Choose colors and prints that pop. An all white background is absolutely beautiful, but having that pop of jewel toned green or that flash of knit texture can really make for a gorgeous photograph.

6. Pack the necessities. Noses tend to run in the cold, and glasses can fog up. Bring tissues, hand-warming packs, clean clothes and hot beverages to keep everyone perky throughout the shoot.

7. Because it can be really cold, note that a shorter session may be in order. Make the most of your photos by using every single second to the max, especially at the beginning of the session when everyone’s still warm and spirits are particularly high. I tend to work quickly and move around a lot to ensure we get a full session packed into a much shorter time! I also choose locations that offer a lot of variety in one area.

I LOVE winter sessions with the gorgeous light, cozy textures, and breathtaking scenery! I can’t wait to photograph your family soon!

Alaska travel photography

Alaska Travel Photography| Eagle River Alaska

Family sessions don’t have to be boring! This family traveled to Alaska on a cruise and booked a photo session like they do on all of their vacations. Which I love! They said they always do one silly one and asked if I could photoshop a giant bear in the background. I had a blast and was happy to fulfill their request!

My three tips from this family session are:

  • Be you! This family was relaxed and a lot of fun!
  • They wanted some fun poses but wanted a lot looking at the camera. Together, when planning, we will figure out what your needs are from your session!
  • Enjoy your time at the session! All the hard work is done in the pre-session planning to get here, now relax and let’s have fun together! When you are relaxed and having fun, it shows!

Anchorage Family Adventure Photographer | Anchorage Alaska – 7 Tips for Preparing for Your Summer Session

You know we’re ready for a nice summer, but are you? We’ve had some rainy wet summers and long winters. So bring on the sunshine!
Here are seven ways you can make sure your summer portrait session goes off without a hitch! Especially since we may have forgotten what summers actually look like 😉

1. Dress appropriately. Summer still means a variety of weather, which means layers are great! Adding a cardigan to a sleeveless dress or top is a great choice. For boys pairing pants with a short sleeve or also bringing a light top to layer is also a good option.

2. Think about your hair. If you or a family member’s hair reacts to humidity or moisture in a negative way, opt for a hairstyle that won’t leave you feeling insecure. For example, a pretty braid or an updo is a good choice. Or use a little extra product to keep frizz at bay.

3.Pack necessities. When packing your photo shoot necessities, I recommend bringing the following items: Lots of water for all, a snack for any grumps, bug spray, bear spray if you are concerned about bears (I usually have some as well just in case), nail trimmer, and makeup touchup.

4. Get creative with session ideas. Summer offers a host of activities that lend themselves to amazing photo sessions. For example, adding bubbles for the littles. They love the whimsy of bubbles, honestly who doesn’t!? A fun quilt or lace blanket to sit on or even have the kids run under as you and your partner hold it up. If we are doing a session with water, rain boots are always a solid choice.

5. Think about head to toe details. For example, if you’re wearing flip-flops or open toed shoes, you want to have manicured feet. I also recommend easy slide on shoes if we are doing some walking and you want to keep your shoes nice while we roam around the location.

6. I mentioned bug spray above as a necessity to pack. The wipes are amazing. The mosquito’s here can be quite a nuisance. I will edit out those pesky photo bombers but it’s good to prepared mentally as well!

7. Land of the midnight sun. Remember that our summers are full of longer days so make sure to keep that in mind when scheduling your session. We may have to adjust naps/sleep schedules to accommodate sessions. So just ensure everyone has had plenty of rest!

Remember to have FUN! I love summer sessions with the sun, the flowers, mountains, and lakes or streams. I can’t wait to adventure with you!
