Impressions from December : a personal project

Hello and yay for kicking off another awesome year! Over the years I have noticed that I am photographing my girls less and less. Especially in the studio when I create sets for my clients. This year I am changing  that.

“Impressions from December 2014: a personal project”

‘Impressions‘ is a creative project by an eclectic group of female photographers from around the globe. We aim to share the inspiration behind what we do through our monthly posts.
On the 8th of each month, we will be sharing 8 images that tell the story of what inspired us in the previous weeks: our families, nature, weather, or maybe even work itself! We are free to explore the meaning of ‘impressions’, and it is likely to change month to month.

LOTS of our little friends have bunk beds. So the girls have been persistent in their requests for bunkbeds. I was excited to be taking time off during the same time as the school break to spend it with the girls and this new project allowed me to start my research at the typical Pottery Barn Kids, Land of Nod, Restoration Hardware and although I found my perfect dream bunkbeds the logistical practicality of living in Alaska won over. So then we started looking local and thought we could just build our own! Brilliant! Great plans online easy peasy. Um except no. We have no woodworking skills or tools and my plans and imagination tend to be HUGE and my awesome husband tends to believe no budget is too large. So we decided quickly we were in over our heads. Thank you Craigs List for coming to rescue. After much scrubbing, sanding, painting, and LOTS of TLC we were sooo excited to share the new room with the girls that they were going to be sharing. Insert crying mom moment here. In the excitement of new bedding, shopping for the beds, etc I failed to acknowledge that this would be the end of cribs/toddler beds and that my youngest would now be in a big girl bed. GAH. Mommy needed a moment to come to terms with this new milestone and massive transition. No more nursery or toddler room. After a few deep breaths I was able to bring the girls in and they were soooooooo excited. It was so much fun! The transition of sharing a room with two girls who are chatty and avoid sleep has been a challenge but I am sure it will get better. I just love the thought of all the adventures they will be plotting in these beds 😀

Now head over to Vinita to check out her month and gorgeous images. Enjoy the blog circle!

I often get asked what my favorite age to photograph is. I do love the squishy newness of the newborns. The tiny details, the rolls, the lanugo, all those perfect features. However, toddlers steal my heart. I love the true personalities. The pure innocence of their thoughts, expressions, and actions. They are full of life in the most rare and unfiltered form. They can be frustrating. Yes, it is annoying when it seems like it takes 10 minutes to wrestle on a pair of shoes. Or someone is licking the wall/floor/shopping cart etc. Yep, so so gross. The tantrums as they wade their way into newfound independence. Then I think of the snuggles and cuddles. The pure way they love. How vibrant and exciting everything becomes when viewed through their eyes. How perfect imperfection is. Every day is a sunshiny adventure. Someday soon they will be going to prom and I will be buying the shoes and not getting to be the one picking them out for my girls. Well, maybe if I’m lucky and they let me 😉 Life will be full of dances/proms/weddings/sports/events, their life will be full of things for THEM. So these very very precious toddler years are just a blip of time. They will not have these memories of sticky fingers and clumsy words. I will have these memories forever. They are mine. These are the mommy years, not just the toddler years. So I hold them close. That’s why I love capturing these few short magical years full of raw personality not just for myself but for the dear families I have the honor of photographing <3 I know these mom’s will look back fondly and remember the way their child had to have their favorite toy or lovie or how they twirled that one strand of hair or the favorite goofy face that either made mom and dad groan or giggle. These tiny snippets of unique and emerging personality that will be treasured forever <3

As my oldest is heading off to kindergarten and my youngest is turning three this week I am holding dear to my heart their bond of sisterhood as it is forming and these fleeting toddler moments.

Every spring we walk around downtown and do a quick urban shoot. This year we were blessed with an early warm and sunny spring! The girls love the wandering and I love catching some fun quick shots of them <3 These are my favorite mommy shots 😀

March was a busy Month and we were so excited to have my brother in law and his fiance visit from the lower 48. I was honored to photograph their surprise proposal (she said yes!) and that was a very hard secret to keep 😉 We also crammed as much of Alaska that we could see in a week! We toured around downtown (Yaaaay for MA’s hot dogs opening just in time!), Eklutna Lake, Talkeetna with gorgeous views of Denali (everyone should add a snowball fight in front of the Denali to their bucket list!), Alyeska Tram, Wildlife Conservation Center (the bears had just woken up!), and of course Seward and the Sealife Center. I’m sure I am forgetting more, but it was a blast and I am so glad they came during such a gorgeous week! I’m looking forward to their visit in the summer with less snow and more green 😀

Happy Valentine’s Day! For this month I wanted to just share a bit about my mini sessions and of course my set testers 😉 I LOVE doing mini’s. I offer them a few times a year and they allow me to create a set around a specific theme. I love the creativity involved and letting my mind wander. Last year I did Easter, Bait Shack, Fall, and Winter Wonderland. This year I have a few fun theme’s in mind that I can’t wait to put together! My first mini’s of this year were the Valentine’s Day mini’s. Planning for these starts months in advance and I start working out dates, packages, set details, props, etc. Then about a week or so before the mini’s I complete the set and bring my testers in to work out any kinks. Usually the set isn’t 100% complete when I bring them in (I always change my mind about things at the last minute lol), but it gives me a good idea of how things are going to work. So as you can see a lot goes into the mini’s and they truly are a blast!

So check out my little testers below and then head on over to Antonina Mamzenko’s website to check out her inspiration!
